Tips on how to prepare for Furniture Storage

There are always various reasons as to why you might require storing some of your furniture. It could be because you’re relocating to a new town or city, or even just to a smaller home. You could be renovating your home and might require storing your furniture to protect it from being damaged or stolen. Another relevant reason as to why you would benefit from furniture storage is to protect your garden furniture from weathering during the winter month. Many families opt for rather storing their outside or veranda furniture in the cold winter month when they are less likely to be used. By doing this you protect them from fading or wearing down due to natural elements like the sun, wind, dust and precipitation.

There are a couple of thing to remember with furniture storage, ranging from the type of unit you choose to use all the way through to packaging precautions to put into action when preparing the items for storage. Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind as the big move approaches;

  •  Any form of moisture will certainly causes extensive damage to your belongings, whether it is from leakage, fungus or even humidity. If the unit you decide upon is not climate controlled, remember to cover your furniture with thick protective plastic sheets, this will not only shield your property from moisture, but will also keep dust, mites and moths away.
  • Safely disassemble your furniture when and if possible. This will ensure less damage to your property, especially if each piece can be individually wrapped in plastic and stored in separated cardboard boxes.
  • Clean everything thoroughly before preparing for storage. The obvious reason for this is avoiding ants and insects nesting in small hooks and corners, but the moment dust accumulates on your furniture and moisture reaches it, it will harder to the surface and demand heavy cleaning, which in turn will once again damage the items.
  • Glass is a difficult medium to store, so it’s wise to purchase a roll of tape specially designed for glass and stick a large ‘X’ on it, this will prevent it from cracking or the entire piece from shattering. This method is applicable for large mirrors, glass tabletops or even television screens. After you’ve applied the tape cover the items with corrugated paper and finally a thick plastic protective sheet. With furniture storage, it’s always better to rather be safe than sorry.
